Is your leadership team trusted?

 

…if not, you could haemorrhage talent from your business.

A survey released this week from the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD) warns that, even in the current economic environment, employers risk losing talented workers to other companies should they fail to tackle distrust in senior management.

According to the CIPD’s quarterly “Employee outlook survey”, around half (47%) of employees who said that they strongly distrusted their directors or senior managers were looking for a new job, compared with fewer than one in 10 (8%) of those who said that they trusted management.

The importance of honing so-called ‘soft’ skills among your leadership team has perhaps never been so acute. Irrespective of their technical excellence in their role, it is often how they motivate, inspire and guide their teams; their ability to provide (and take) constructive feedback, their leadership through change and their ability to communicate in a compelling and effective way that can make a significant difference to commercial outcomes.
